Winter Warmers at Asoka Kloof Street
12 July 2014
What better way to spend your cold winter evenings than at a cosy restaurant with a very unique atmosphere, gourmet cuisine and the most interesting cocktails. Asoka Restaurant in Kloof Street definitely comes highly recommended and it is the perfect restaurants for a night out with friends because of the awesome vibe. We were lucky enough to go on a Tuesday night which is also Jazz Night and contributes to a really amazing atmosphere and reminded me of the restaurants in New York!

We were spoilt not only be getting to try the amazing food on the menu, but also their gourmet cocktails. Everyone's favourite and the most delicious in my opinion is the Porn Star Martini (vanilla vodka, fresh passion fruit and vanilla sugar) which also comes with a shot of champagne!

Other cocktails that come highly recommended includes The Hemmingway Daiquiri, the Mellow Yellow (which is a very refreshing fruity drink) and for the ladies, the Rossini (strawberry and creme de fraise charged with sparkling wine):

The cocktails alone are more than enough reason to pay Asoka a visit, but the food is a must no matter which item on the menu you try. My favourite is their share platters just because it gives you a good variety of their food and it goes great with cocktails!
We had the Mezze Platter which included oven baked pita breads, marinated feta and olives, hummus, tzatziki, tomatoes and cucumber - light, delicious and perfectly balanced. For our meat lovers, the trio of mini lamb burgers with slow roasted tomatoes, tempura onion rings, brie, avocado and basil pesto are not only very cute to look at but also incredibly tasty.

When it came to choosing our mains, we left it up to our waitress as we wanted to try their signature dishes that are the most popular and that people came back for time and time again. Ritza had the crispy duck with with a burnt orange sauce, corn puree and stir fry vegetables which was perfectly balanced with sweet and sticky flavour.

I had the Teriyaki Beef Fillet with wilted greens, shitake mushrooms and wasabi mayo sauce. I loved the Asian flavour and of course no steak is complete without some chips and Asoka's chips come with lemon, coriander and creme fraiche.

The best part of any meal has to be the dessert and we had the strawberry panna cotta with vanilla short bread. It was my first time I had panna cotta and it is definitely my new favourite dessert. It is light, creamy and the perfect end to a meal - this dessert comes highly recommended!

Thank you to Asoka for having us and for spoiling us with such a gourmet experience! To book your own experience at Asoka, contact them at www.asokabar.co.za or phone 021 422 0909
