Anyone who follows both myself and my wife Ritza on social media will know that we absolutely love the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. We always choose to do our meetings there and there's no better place in Cape Town for an Afternoon Tea.
Last week we had the opportunity to have dinner at the stylish Lord Nelson Restaurant and it was a delicious night out with great food, amazing service and a very romantic ambience.
For those who aren't familiar with the Lord Nelson Restaurant, this dining space was originally one of the hotel’s dining rooms and the wooden chairs were once used by first class passangers on the Union-Castle Shipping Lines. Walking into the restaurant it felt like we went back in time with the rich oak panelling and ornate pressed ceilings, staying true to what the Mount Nelson is known for: being one of the oldest yet luxurious hotels in the Mother City.
Another very special element at the Lord Nelson Restaurant is the live entertainment. While enjoying your exquisite cuisine, the talented pianist Henry Dike creates a romantic mood with seductive melodies and really makes your evening one to remember.
I simply love the contrast between the old world glamour in the decor of the Lord Nelson Restaurant with the fresh and vibrant menu created by Executive Chef, Rudi Liebenberg. Chef Rudi is a supporter of sustainable farming and the farm-to-fork method of sourcing and serving produce for his restaurant and I must say, every plate of food that we enjoyed during our meal was as beautiful as it was delicious - it really was art on a plate.
Scallop and sweetbreads with prosciutto | cauliflower purée | capers and lime
Prawn and mussel saffron velouté (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This dish was our favourite amongst the starters)
Salmon tartare with lime seaweed crumble | rice cracker | kimchi and miso cured egg yolk
For mains we opted for something a bit different. The Beef Wellington that is carved at the table and served with all the sides you can possibly think of to complement the beef. I think this meal is comfort food served fine dining style so I would definitely recommend this, as it is such a satisfying meal that is meant to be shared with a glass of wine and good company.
Beef Wellington for two, carved table side: Served with roasted potatoes | seasonal vegetables | chef’s salad jus and béarnaise sauce
Grilled Lamb Loin: Crispy Lamb Bacon, fine beans, slow roasted tomato, confit neck (we paired this with the recommend Cavalli Estate "Warlord" wine and it was a match made in heaven. Highly recommend this wine!)
Salted Rosemary Baked Chocolate Tart with Milk Chocolate Chilli Ice-Cream
We were actually some of the first customers to try the desserts on their newly launched dessert menu and they are all absolutely yummy - although the Baked Alaska was a firm favourite around the table so give that one a go if you have a sweet tooth!
Overall, we agreed as a team that besides the incredible meal we enjoyed at the Lord Nelson Restaurant, we were amazed by the service we received during our meal. The ladies received special chairs for their handbags, personalized wifi codes were provided to us and the manager educated us on some amazing South African wines that we can highly recommend. The hotel and restaurant lived up to it's 5-star luxury rating and we cannot wait to return for our next meal.
Thank you to the Lord Nelson Restaurant team for such a delicious food experience.
For a price indication, you are looking at: 2 courses R345 or 3 courses R420 or 4 courses R540 - incredibly reasonable for the quality of the food in this luxurious restaurant.
