Most of you know by now that my favourite place in Cape Town is the luxury hair salon Marios Company Hair and I recently spotted the incredible range of scented candles , soaps & lotions products from the lifestyle brand Cape Island in the salon and after trying it out and learning more about the brand, I knew that I had to share it with our readers.
What is the story behind Cape Island?
After living in London for 12 years, co-founder Suzanne Snowdowne returned to South Africa with her family and was inspired to create a stylish South African lifestyle brand that would be sophisticated enough to rival some of the best international products out there. The vision was to create this uniquely South African brand which would tell the story of the African continent and simultaneously uplift its people through job creation.
Since its inception in 2015 Cape Island has changed a fair amount. The brand originally focused on home decor and over time the focus has evolved into a love of quality home & body fragrance. The all-female team has also evolved into a strong core of complimentary personalities, with Suzanne handling creative direction of the company and Karin Wood responsible for financial and operational direction.
We’ve achieved so much in only three only three years, but we still have big dreams and so much that we want to do with Cape Island. The brand is here to stay and our customers can expect many more new fragrances and exciting products in the future!
What makes the brand so unique?
What makes Cape Island unique is that we have a passion for telling narratives through our products in a way that inspires people. The story is told through the fragrance itself but also through the dramatic artwork that appears on our packaging. These striking illustrations were created by local artist Sharon Boonzaier.
In addition, we are proud of the fact that we have a strong focus on high quality, natural ingredients, micro-batch production and ethical, reusable packaging. From our fragrance oils which we import from the Grasse region of France to the organic coconut oil base in our soaps and lotions and our elegant glass packaging, we strive to create a luxurious experience from beginning to end.
Can you give us a bit of information on the different scents and their names?
Clifton Beach is the signature fragrance in the collection and it never fails to delight the senses. The sweet and captivating notes of coconut & vanilla are expertly layered with tolu balsam and lime which offer the fragrance a fresh and alluring hook. The coconut note has energizing and uplifting effects on both the mind and the body, easing anxiety and tension. The Clifton Beach fragrance is a holiday in itself which leaves you dreaming of palm trees scattered along white sandy beaches and fresh Atlantic Ocean mist landing on golden, salted skin.
Next is Constantia Heights... An elegant, floral fragrance inspired by relaxed afternoons spent soaking up the sweeping vistas and lush gardens found on many of South Africa’s best loved wine estates. Bright, uplifting neroli and delightful ylang-ylang are blended with petitgrain and fresh fig leaf. Constantia Heights is a relaxing meander through an unexpected South African paradise.
And finally, Safari Days. A complex fragrance inspired by the untamed African wilderness. Crisp bergamot settles into an earthy blend of cypress, patchouli, wild sage and cedarwood. Woody yet fresh, Safari Days invites you to escape your immediate surroundings and wander into the African bush.
